The Douglas County Historical Society is proud to announce the return of Mr. Gerald Dickens, the great-great grandson of author Charles Dickens, November 16 and 17 for his heartwarming one-man show performances. Tickets are on sale now!
Gerald Dickens, an accomplished actor and director from Oxford, England, once told the New York Times that while the British are somewhat blase about Dickens, Americans hold Charles Dickens in reverence. Early in his career, Gerald himself avoided his famous relative's work. When he finally read it publicly, he was struck by the power of the dialogue.
"I learned that Charles used to rehearse 200 to 300 times in front of a mirror," he told the Boston Globe. Gerald emulates his great-great-grandfather in his beloved performance of "A Christmas Carol". He leaps, he sobs, he laughs.as he entertains.depicting 26 characters of the classic tale, with just a table, wing chair, and hat rack accompanying him on stage.
Similar to last year, Mr. Dickens' time here in Omaha will be a whirlwind of performances and book signings, offering two performances of his captivating rendition of the traditional holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol" as well as two shows never before seen here in Nebraska.
Gerald will premier the only mid-west performance of his brand new show, specifically written in celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens entitled, "The Complete Works of Charles Dickens".
The performance features extracts from all the major novels in chronological order. Also a first time performance in Nebraska, "A Chance Encounter with Dickens" takes us back to 1868, when Charles Dickens traveled to the USA. He was old, in poor health and in constant fear for his safety following a narrow escape in the great Staplehurst rail disaster a few years earlier. At the heart of this show is a young girl's memory of meeting the great man on a train journey in New England, and Dickens' enchantment with both her boldness and innocence.
Dickens' 2012 tour will take him to 13 states across the country. His performances are produced by Byers' Choice Ltd. of Chalfont, PA, makers of the nationally known Carolers® and Kindles® figurines. Custom figurines commemorating this year's performances are available for sale through the Douglas County Historical Society.
