Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska (LFS) continues its 120th anniversary celebration with a special Faith in Action event on Sunday, September 16.

Lutheran Family Services held its first celebratory event in North Platte on August 26 and the second will be Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Embassy Suites/LaVista. Tickets and reservations are required, but everyone is welcome to attend.

LFS began as two orphanages in 1892, and thousands of children have found their families through its adoption and foster care services. Over the decades, LFS has also grown into one of the largest human care organizations in the state, focusing on the three core competencies of behavioral health, children services, and service to new populations. Its thirty programs are now as varied as those served: sexually-abused children, veterans with post traumatic stress disorder, and refugees from war-ravaged countries - just to name a few. Immanuel Communities is the premier sponsor of both events.

Here's copy from the invite:

Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska touches lives every day.
Please join us as we celebrate our history and look toward a promising future.

We welcome you to our 120th celebration in Omaha.
Prior to dinner, an open cocktail reception will provide an opportunity for current and former pregnancy, parenting and adoption staff to reunite with birthparents, adoptive parents, adoptees and their children!

The Strategic Air & Space Museum pays tribute to all the innocent victims of 9/11 with a special memorial display of 2,977 American flags, creating a Field of Remembrance. Each flag represents and honors an individual who perished during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

This is the second year the Strategic Air & Space Museum has staged the breathtaking display of flags on its expansive front lawn. The special Field of Remembrance display was made possible through Mutual of Omaha's National Month of Caring Project, nearly 1,100 employees committed to volunteering in nearly 50 communities across the country.

"We are pleased to work with volunteers from Mutual of Omaha to provide this memorial for the community," said Scott Tarry, Executive Director of the Strategic Air & Space Museum.

"The sights and sounds of nearly 3,000 flags fluttering in the breeze will undoubtedly provide a poignant reminder of the tragic events of September 11. Museum guests will have the opportunity to walk amongst the flags and remember those who were lost in the attacks as well as the emergency responders who so willingly sacrificed their lives in an effort to serve and protect others."

The Field of Remembrance will be on display Tuesday, September 11, through Sunday, September 16.

B-29 Goes on Display at The Strategic Air & Space Museum

The Strategic Air & Space Museum is proud to unveil one of the world's last surviving Boeing B-29 Super Fortresses on Saturday, September 22, in commemoration of its first flight 70 years ago on September 21, 1942.

The meticulous restoration of this incredible aircraft began in February of 2006. The Strategic Air & Space Museum's restoration crew of three staff members and several dozen volunteers have devoted over 23,000 hours across the years to sanding, painting, and welding the WWII-era bomber's gleaming airframe, which houses the painstakingly restored flight deck, crew areas, bombbays, and tailgunner station.

The B-29 is not only significant in world history, but also to our Nebraska history as well. The former Martin Bomber Plant of Bellevue, Nebraska was one of only four facilities to build the B-29 during the WWII era.

The most famous B-29 airplane to come from that plant, the Enola Gay, dropped the atomic bomb that ended WWII in 1945.The Enola Gay is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's Udvar Hazy Center near Washington, DC. Guests are not allowed near the aircraft, which is displayed above the museum floor on pedestals.

By contrast, the Strategic Air & Space is committed to sharing the power and beauty of the B-29 with museum guests by allowing them to not only get close to the massive airplane, but also allowing them to access the interior and gain a unique appreciation for the experiences of the brave men who flew the Super Fortress in defense of our nation.

"We are thrilled to unveil the newly restored B-29 to the public and place this incredible artifact on display in one of the world's finest collections of military aircraft," said Scott Tarry, Strategic Air & Space Museum Executive Director.

"Finishing the B-29 gives us the opportunity to turn our attention and the energy of our extraordinarily talented restoration staff and volunteers to new projects, which we will announce at the unveiling. We're excited about involving the community in our next projects since there aren't many better ways for young people and not so young people to learn about history and technological innovation than to get involved in the hands-on and richly rewarding work of restoring and preserving these special airplanes for future generations." Tarry explained.

Please join us as we celebrate this amazing accomplishment and thank those who made it possible.

Additionally, one woman will receive keys to a refurbished 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt under the Recycled Rides program.
