The Douglas County Historical Society presents its 3rd Annual Tombstone Tour. This year, two dates are offered; choose from either September 30th or October 7th.

Our guided motor coach tour begins by heading toward South Omaha, as we explore cemeteries and honor the lives and contributions of Omaha's departed.

We'll start at one of the city's oldest burial sites, Laurel Hill Cemetery near 21st and Polk Streets. We'll discover unique aspects of St. Mary's and St. Mary Magdalene's cemeteries before heading west to the Bohemian Cemetery and Westlawn-Hillcrest. Refreshments provided at each cemetery stop, as we toast the memory of those who have gone before us. Your tour guide will regale you with cryptic commentary, plus you'll receive a souvenir booklet on cemetery history.

Boarding begins at 1:30 pm at the General Crook House Museum located in Historic Fort Omaha; pre-boarding refreshments and snacks provided. The bus will depart at 2 pm sharp and return to the Museum by 5:30 pm.

Appetizers, wine, ghost stories and more will be provided at the Museum after the tour.

Cost is $45 for members and $50 for non-members - make your reservations by September 1st and get $5.00 off!!!

Reservations due by September 21st for the September 30th
Tour and by September 28th for the October 7th Tour.

Fundraiser for 12-year old fighting brain cancer

Isabel (Bella) is a 12 year old girl who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. She has had two surgeries on her brain in the last month. Bella is determined to fight this cancer with all her might, Fight like a Girl!

Localmize Launches Bellevue Community Foundation Website

Bellevue, Neb., August 27, 2012 -- The Bellevue Community Foundation was formed by engaged community leaders and caring citizens in May 2012 to strengthen the Bellevue community through charitable giving. The Foundation's mission is to ignite passion, inspire action and create capital to invest in Bellevue. The Foundation will build on great work by the City, the County, the school district, the business community, and so many nonprofits, policymakers, and individual Bellevue residents.

Funds raised will help support important local issues and programs such as beautification, youth activities, parks, arts and culture, the environment, health and human services, economic development, and local non-profits.

The Bellevue Community Foundation is seeking individual and corporate members to join its elite Founder's Club to be the introductory community builders to shape Bellevue's future. The following individual and corporate membership levels are available: Member $500-$999;
Patron $1,000-$2,999;
Bronze $3,000-$4,999;
Silver $5,000-$9,999;
Gold $10,000-$24,999,
Platinum $25,000-$49,999 and
Diamond $50,000 and above.

Volunteers also are needed for fundraising activities as well as in-kind donations from businesses for marketing and printing services.

NOVA 1-2-3 Recovery Walk

The NOVA 1-2-3 Recovery Walk is held in September during National Recovery Month, which focuses attention on recovery from substance abuse disorders through treatment programs.

NOVA's walk will take place on Saturday morning, September 22 at Heartland of America Park, downtown Omaha. Check in starts at 8:30 and the walk begins at 9:30.

Choose to walk one- two- or three-miles around the lagoon -- and help support NOVA Treatment Community's residential, outpatient and foster care programs.

End of Summer Concert Series Begins this Friday, Acclaimed Entertainer Billy McGui

Billy McGuigan and his high-powered tribute to some of rock's greatestlegends - from The Rolling Stones and The Beatles to The Monkees and Steve Miller Band. McGuigan, creator of three nationally touring shows: Rave On,Yesterday and Today, and Rock Legend, has wowed audiences in more than 2000 performances.

His Turner Park concert promises to be an unforgettable evening of classic rock driven, in part, by audience requests. Inspired at an early age by his father's love of music, McGuigan's performances have broken box office and attendance records in six theaters across the country.

He is backed by a group of in-demand musicians who have dedicated their lives to perfecting their craft. McGuigan's career highlights include a Spotlight Award for "Best Actor in a Musical," a nomination for an Arizoni Award in the category "Best Actor in a lead role - Musical," performing with two of Buddy Holly's contemporaries and Rockabilly Hall of Fame members Tommy Allsup (Buddy Holly's lead guitarist) and Sonny West (songwriter of Rave On! and Oh, Boy!), and most recently, winning an Omaha Arts Entertainment Award for Yesterday and Today.

WCA Career Services Program Launches Four-Part Series for Success Workshops for Job Seekers

The Women's Center for Advancement (WCA) is launching a series of workshops designed to give insights and tips for area job seekers. It will be held on four consecutive Mondays from 6 p.m. -7:30 p.m., at the College of Saint Mary, Mercy Hall, located at 7000 Mercy Drive, beginning Sept. 10.

The Series for Success is a collaborative effort between the WCA, Careerlink and HR professionals through the Human Resources Association of the Midlands (HRAM).

"What makes this different than other workshop offerings is that the WCA is also partnering with HR professionals who will be presenting at the workshops. They will be providing valuable insights from area employers' points of view," said Nancy Peck Todd, Chief Career Partnership Officer.

The workshops feature career readiness assessments, networking opportunities with local HR professionals, mock interviews conducted by employers, access to the WCA Career Clothing Closet for women's interview attire and first access for workshops attendees to the WCA's Two-Day Career Extravaganza.

Todd said the Series for Success is aimed at those who are currently unemployed and seeking employment, currently employed but seeking a career change and those who want to polish skills and learn new job search techniques.
