Join the Douglas County Historical Society at our June 10th Second Sunday Talk, "The Beer Baron of Omaha and Other Bootlegging Tales". The talk begins at 2 p.m. and will be held in building 21, the Mule Barn, on Metropolitan Community College's Fort Omaha Campus, just off of 32nd and Sorensen Parkway.

Jack Kawa and Jack Atkins discuss prohibition, bootlegging and the early days of Johnny's Café, the landmark South Omaha steakhouse.

The son of Johnny's Café founder Frank Kawa, Jack, ran the restaurant from 1964 to 2006 and is the president of the Omaha Restaurant Association Foundation. Jack Atkins, a historian and retired businessman, is the son of Johnny Atkins, a one-time fruit peddler who ran one of Omaha's major bootlegging operations in the 1930s.

Reservations are required. Please call 402-455-9990, or email members@DouglasCoHistory.org to reserve your spot.

The talk is free for members; a $5 donation is requested of non-members. Second Sunday Talks are supported by the Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Memorial Foundation.

Don't Save a Spot at Your Table

Water rings are uninvited guests resulting from hot cups of steaming coffee and cool glasses of iced tea alike. Moisture and heat can sometimes cause white rings to appear on the finish of your table. Depending on the severity of the mark, simple repairs can be made without having to refinish the entire table.

Furniture Medic experts suggest chemically opening the finish to allow the moisture to evaporate. This can be done by two methods. First, apply a rubbing compound in a circular motion to the water ring. This friction produces heat that will open the finish and allow the moisture to escape.

Another method is the light application of a solvent product, which should only be attempted by a qualified furniture repair technician. Once the finish is opened and the moisture dries, the sheen of the damaged area may need rubbing with steel wool or polishing with a deluxing compound.

If you are not sure about the best method to choose, call the Furniture Medic for more assistance. Brendan Bonner 402-429-6799 http://fmbybrrestorations.com/

Press Release: June 5, 2012 Omaha, Nebraska USA - "Persons with low vision have complained for years that the Omaha World Herald is hard to read", says Pat Fischer, CEO of Vision Helpers.

In response to this problem we have created the Low Vision Reader which is a Dell laptop for portability connected to a high definition 20" LED display, and sharing displays with a Vizio 42" high definition screen. The 42" screen is also connected to a Freedom Scientific Topaz XL high definition desktop video magnifier which allows the printed version of the Omaha World Herald to be read. In addition, the computer is running software called MAGic that allows the computer screen to be magnified large enough for the person with low vision to perform all computer operations.

"This computer and software allows a person with low vision the ability to perform all computer tasks including reading the Omaha world Herald on-line. This is a total solution and what we love about the low vision reader, is that we have every option available to accommodate a person with low vision. Reading is an extension to life, and being able to read when you want to read is independence, and the low vision reader is the best solution for everybody." says Mr. Fischer.

Options range from an 84" display to the fastest Dell computers available in desktop or laptop, as well as the entire Freedom Scientific line of Blindness and Low Vision products.

Backed by the service of Accessibility.net, Vision Helpers is America's answer to those persons with low vision that want to continue to read and remain independent.
