National "Let's Move/Let's Read" Initiative
Adds Gift of Music & Dancing to
Obesity Prevention Efforts

(Omaha, NE) The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, an integral partner in the national Let's Move/ Let's Read program, announced today the addition of a new musical program that will offer upbeat motivation and the power of dancing in the fight against obesity.

"Award-winning songwriter Karen Sokolof Javitch, approached and offered us her "Movin' to the Beat!" CD - free of charge! It contains six original songs composed to inspire children and seniors to eat right and exercise," explains Janice Williams, Senior VP at the YMCA. "Our staff found the lyrics and music to be a perfect fit. We will be using the children's version to get kids moving in the Let's Move/ Let's Read program and our childhood obesity prevention program, PHD (Physical, Healthy and Driven). The adult version will help over 2,000 DC seniors get active in our Fit & Well Seniors program."

"When "Movin' to the Beat!" was finished, my goal was to have partners like the YMCA and Let's Move/Let's Read utilize it any way they could to help combat childhood obesity," Javitch reveals." I want my music to continue the work that my late father Phil Sokolof started years ago. He focused on the dangers of high cholesterol while I am focusing on the dangers of obesity in children."

The Let's Move/Let's Read initiative has been a force to be reckoned with in preventing summer reading loss and childhood obesity. It engages youth in summer reading, physical activity and healthy snacks at a time when most kids are sedentary. "Let's Move "was created by Michelle Obama - her legacy as First Lady.

About Karen Sokolof Javitch:
Karen Sokolof Javitch has raised over $300,000 for national and local charities through her original music. Her musicals, including one about the late Princess Diana, have been performed in Los Angeles, Lincoln, Chicago, New York City, St. Paul/Minneapolis, St. Louis as well as Omaha. She has produced 10 CD's of her original music and recently she received honorable mention in the 'Song of the Year' contest for her song, "It's a Steve Jobs' World!" Her musicals and songs are also performed by young people in high schools and colleges around the country.
